My Teacher: Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati

Vastuved International

A Short Biography

Born in the year 1927, at Pillayarpatti, a village near Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati comes from an illustrious family of temple architects and sculptors. His family lineage stretches back many decades, including the sthapatis who created the great Brihadeeswara Temple of Tanjore, the treasure house of Indian art and architecture. Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati is the son of Sri Vaidyanatha Sthapati, a renowned sculptor and Sanskrit scholar. Sthapati and his father have made remarkable contributions to the field of art and architecture.

Those who have made the pilgrimage to Sri Ramana Ashram in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, will fondly recall the artistic expressions of Sri Vaidyanatha Sthapati in the form of Mother Alagammal’s Shrine and the astonishing lifelike sculpture of Sri Ramana at the ashram. Sthapati told me a story of the completion of the statue: Each day, as Sri Vaidyanatha sculpted the image, Sri Ramana would visit the artist at work. One day, as Sri Ramana viewed the work, the saint commented, “Ramana has arrived.” At that point, Sri Vaidyanatha Sthapati laid down is tools: the image was complete.
